  5. Re: Rendered system unbootable, volume group "does not exist", drops into shell

Thanks for the info oldfred. The explanation about the grub volume makes sense.

I was just using gparted to look at the volumes and see what's there, not to make changes.

    I'm a backup fanatic...

Ok I was able to use cryptsetup open to mount the boot and root drives manually, and I can see my files, including the boot_os.keyfile file that I overwrote initially.

I think I will go ahead and...
  8. Re: Rendered system unbootable, volume group "does not exist", drops into shell

I tried to see if it was an issue with a "bad superblock" and did the following, doesnt seem fruitful:

    root@ubuntu:~# fsck.ext4 -v /dev/nvme1n1p2
    e2fsck 1.45.5 (07-Jan-2020)
    ext2fs_open2: Bad...

I think I've fixed my issues....
  11. Re: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade caused my ubuntu install to think it's linux mint, not

OK I got rid of the two repositories which were in /etc/apt/sources.list/d that referred to linux mint... the "official-package-repository" or something like that, was sneaky and stealth but I...
  12. Re: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade caused my ubuntu install to think it's linux mint, not

Yes I'm sure I did it wrong... this is my first linux laptop and I have been flogging my way through things.

  16. Re: How to quick-erase an existing ext4 partition, to make it empty and fresh as new?

well I thought I had succeeded, but looks like actually I messed everything up as I had feared.

After issuing the mkfs.ext4 command, the filesystem was there and worked fine, mounted where...
  17. Re: How to quick-erase an existing ext4 partition, to make it empty and fresh as new?

The complicating factors are the encryption system, auto-mounting on startup and with mount command, and my being a relative n00b.

I did the following and it seemed to work:

    A)
    unmount...
