Hi All - ok this is a weird one. This system has been doing this before but I put it down to a glitch to start with though now that ive reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch its obviously something else....
Thanks for all the help guys - in the end I've given up, deleted all the linux partitions and reinstalled from the live CD (gone back to 10.04) and its all working now.

Nope, holding down either shift or the down arrow made any difference.
It still just gives me a "out of range" message
