I do not understand what you mean by ubuntu not recognizing drivers. Did you try using the restricted drivers in ubuntu (System > Admin > Hardware drivers)? What does that say?

First, did you do an upgrade or fresh install of lucid?
Second, which version did you install? i386 or the AMD64?
I would suggest i386 first. Have you tried enabling all the restricted drivers?

The behaviour you are describing usually occurs with Alt+Mouse click. Maybe the alt key is stuck in place or something?

Have you tried copying files to other external media, say usb memory sticks or a second external HDD, etc? Please post more details as to what the error message is.

It is quite likely that one of the recent graphics driver updates broke your display. I understand that ATI, Nvidia and Intel graphics can cause problems to a lot of users. Wait for 9.10 or downgrade...
