    Have you tried opening it with a Hex editor such as bless?

    bless notworkingfile.txt

    cat notworkingfile.txt > newfile.txtIt should just capture the plain text. Where "notworkingfile.txt" is the one not opening in gedit, and "newfile.txt" is the new file.
