Used to be a great option - nowadays it`s a waste of time. Why would you bother when you can buy a small compact device that will do switching and wireless as well with no moving parts and low power...

Use the same ethernet cables you have - no need for anything else. Most modems nowadays can be bought with the switch (usually a 4 port) built in.

You don`t need Cat 6 abling - Cat 5 will happily pass Gigabit ethernet. I doubt very much you will see a performance boost by going Gigabit anyway.

Dont make the mistake of buying good kit and powering it with a rubbish power supply. Invest in a good quiet power supply.

Problem with many wikis is that they are either too complicated to use or administer. I like wakowiki - it`s lite and easy to setup.
