    Broken hardware wifi switch

Posting this in case anyone else struggles to fix their wifi (with a mini PCI-E / PCI Express card).

    Situation:
Wireless working one minute, then stops working. Network Manager claims wifi card...

    Re: CMS? Wiki? Suggestions needed

Haven't used it myself in a few years, but Foswiki sounds like a good fit:
    http://foswiki.org/
It is basically a wiki with different levels of access depending on user groups.
    There are obviously...
  3. Re: Request for advice on choice of portable device

If you want to receive calls on your Nexus 7, any sip provider should work with 3G. Not quite the same as Google Voice with call forwarding etc, but depends on what you need.
    I use sipgate.co.uk in...

    Re: LibreOffice vs MSOffice compatibility

Why do you say you need to save in .docx at all? If you've been using LO for 2 years, why not just keep using it?

If the issue is edits by your supervisor, I would actually suggest you save as...

[ubuntu] Re: best way to do "mac" style in Ubuntu?

I'm hoping so too... I've installed Elementary on my Netbook and subsequently put Pantheon on top of Ubuntu on my main computer (which was a bit of a struggle)... Wouldn't want to have to take a step...

Re: Is it cruel to keep pets?

    This represents cruelty.

The human interest in keeping "purebred" pets has ensured pets have been bred with siblings, parents and children over repeated generations (incest in humans).

    This...

[ubuntu] Re: best way to do "mac" style in Ubuntu?

I remain a fan... But be warned: Pantheon interferes with other DEs, so it can be troublesome if installed on top of another Ubuntu / derivative OS (from personal experience).
If you want to try it,...

Re: JoliCloud OS - Problem - Please, help me!

There are plenty of "looks nice and fast" Ubuntu-based OS available.
    Consider:
Elementary OS http://elementaryos.org/journal/luna-beta-1-released (my personal favourite - but still in beta)
    Bodhi...

Re: JoliCloud OS - Problem - Please, help me!

    Why do you need JoliOS?
As far as I am aware, it is based on an out-dated (pre 2012) Ubuntu, so probably has no drivers for newer hardware.
You might be better off installing a recent (usable) OS...

    Re: First Ubuntu Phone OEM?

It seems you've answered your own question with the most likely contenders... Although I would have put these as probable Firefox OS OEMs aiming at the low end.

Ubuntu is trying to position itself...
  11. Re: Minimum hardware for wifi connectivity from tablet to pc?

    Would it work? Yes.

There are many specialised Linux distros / other OS that are designed to act as a router. Ubuntu has that capacity if configured correctly.

But - as Nr90 says - your desktop...
  12. Re: Basic web security question: what should I do to secure personal web server?

This is a bit misleading... There is no genuine "free" tier - only a 12-month free period. And credit card details are still required (therefore, only available to over 18s).
    So this is only really...

Re: Male Facial Hair and Job Search?

It seems pretty simple to me:

Clean shaven is better in some industries
Facial hair may be acceptable in others

If in doubt, and you want the job: option 1.
    When you're the one looking...
  15. Re: District Administrator for an ISD. Any stats on Ubuntu savings for education?

Savings will depend on whether it is a new lab, or an upgrade of existing hardware / software. It also depends on discounts received on MS software. For example, my department have just purchased a...

    [SOLVED] Re: LyX spell checker

Old thread, but just found on Google. My solution for 12.04:
Enchant is probably already installed, but just in case:

    sudo apt-get install enchant
Then as per above advice to activate.
  17. odg vector drawings (Open/LibreOffice images) in Lyx

I started this thread, but realised I had found a solution before posting. I posted anyway for others reference and comments.
    First:

Then , to insert an odg into...

    Re: Bloated since Intrepid Ibex?

    Everything is relative...

My brother thinks Ubuntu is bloated, since it includes drivers for things that his computer doesn't have; his choice of Gentoo foregoes that.
