Most HP Printers are supported out of the box in Ubuntu did you try installing the printer without installing the hplip drivers?
Make sure that the multiverse repository is enabled. Go to System>Admistration>Software Sources to check.
As long as you have a partition that hasn't been formatted and is just free space, Ubuntu has an option to install on the largest continous free space and it will partition it out automatically too.
Go to System>Preferences>Sessions and click on the Session Options tab. Make sure that the box that says "Automatically remember running applications when logging out" is not checked.
