MadCow: that worked, thanks! Just a couple of minor niggles though, I'm trying to work out as many compilation warning as possible, and I get these for the void and int casts:

I'm having a major headache with some code, and it's down to my (rather crap) understanding of pointers.
I have the following code fragment:

I have a slight problem with my Karmic x64 installation - it doesn't register itself with a DNS lookup on my CentOS DHCP server. My Windows 7 installation on the same PC works fine (I have a...
I haven't really tried a lot since Fedora 10 was released (I did an in-place upgrade from F10 to F11) as I'm more concerned with getting a stable system than I am with playing with drivers.

If your install is failing at the same point mine is, you should see...
Firstly try using a CD-R instead of an RW, and also try verifying the ISO against the MD5SUM file on the Ubuntu website - instructions on the Ubuntu Wiki How-To.
At what stage in GRUB is the file not found error appearing?
I have had very similar problems with a fresh install of 8.04.1 (topic here), the vmlinuz file loads fine, but the 2.6.24-19 kernel's...
The badblocks check ran fine and completed with no bad blocks found.
I think the problem is just a missing file - the initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic file that the /initrd.img symlink refers to is...

Herman,
Many thanks for the reply, I have tried everything you suggested but still cannot boot to Ubuntu.
When I do the direct kernel boot, GRUB complains that it cannot find the /initrd.img...
The Logitech G9 is a Laser mouse :)
What motherboard are you using? It could be that Ubuntu doesn't like that particular chipset. Also, try using the CD as a LiveCD (not an installer) - you can test stuff like hardware compatability...
