First off I'd like to thank you all for the tips and tricks found here.
I installed the repos as suggested above and was able to install gimp.

Gimp starts up and works in single...

At boot it tells me I do not have the necessary hardware to run Unity.

I cannot find unity 2D in the boot options.

I guess I'll have to check synaptic and see if I can find it there.

Yep, ubuntu 11.04 is the only ubuntu in my linux-Download file :)

Additional drivers gives "No proprietary drivers are in use".
