Ok I figured out my problem. I have too many fonts installed. I renamed my /home/username/.fonts directory to "fonts" without a dot and it has fixed my problem.

I am having the same problem as well. Have reinstalled. appmenu-gtk is not listed in synaptic on my 10.04 install.

It must have something to do with my fonts. I just went to edit>preferences>content>fonts&colors>advanced and unchecked the box "allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections...

The easy way to do it is to drag your theme tarball into the themes window.

Go to system>preferences>appearance>theme tab
Drag your tarball to that window and the gtk theme should install.
(you can drag icon sets to the theme tab too)
You can further tweak things...
I had similar problems with gdesklets last night. I ended up removing it, then reinstalling, and that seemed to fix things.
Mine were also showing up in the taskbar, among other things.
So are you changing the window border *and* the application theme?
