I have tried
sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
with no joy.
I have also checked that the sources.list is for raring.
how do you suggest I update the kernal version.

You will find your Thunderbird profile in your Home folder. Just press [ctrl] + [h] to show hidden files and all the .files will appear look for .Thunderbird and you are there.
One thing I forgot to mention was to hear pulseaudio-jack ensure you enable the JackSink audio module in Sound settings to hear pulseaudio.
