    Turned out needed to install a package called firmware-iwlwifi. That's why Mint works: it has the non-free firmware already...

    If you're using grub 1.x (pre ubuntu 9.10) , then to add this option to the kernel at bootup open the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and edit it as root.
    this is the file that controls your boot-time...
