    WinEdt (LaTeX file editor)

    Kile does a somewhat similar job but I use Gnome.......

    Hi.
    Have you tried testing some of your hardware - like ram, disk etc. It sounds a bit like a hardware failure. No computer - no matter what OS - should act like that.
