  1. [ubuntu] Re: Can boot persistent liveUSB from laptops but not desktops

    Yes, it seems likely a hardware-related problem.

    Sorry, but I don't know anybody who uses a B450M based desktop. Let us hope someone with experience of that kind of computer can chip in and help...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Can boot persistent liveUSB from laptops but not desktops

    Thanks for the details. Unfortunately I still don't understand what is the problem. I can only suggest some more 'trial and error'.

    Try another tool/method to create the persistent live drive

  3. [ubuntu] Re: trouble installing ubuntu to a thumb drive to boot on both Mac and PC hardware

    1. If a persistent live system (according to @ tea for one) works well for you, fine :-)

    2. Otherwise you can try an installed system according to the following method. (It is possible that your...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Can boot persistent liveUSB from laptops but not desktops

    You have really checked a lot of alternatives and shown where the problem occurs. I don't understand what is the problem and how to make a persistent live drive work in the problematic computer.

  5. [lubuntu] Re: [SOLVED]Extremely small font size after nVidia driver installation

    Thanks for sharing this tweak :-)
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Can boot persistent liveUSB from laptops but not desktops

    Can you still boot other computers from this persistent live drive?

    In that case there is a problem with this particular computer (and I don't know how to solve it).

    But if also the other...
  7. [SOLVED] Re: Live DVD 20.04.1 - only goes to wallpaper ??

    The exec line contains the command

    ubiquity kde_ui

    This is the installer. If you run that command from a terminal window in graphics mode, it should work 'as intended'.

    In text mode it...

    @oygle,

    I will answer at that other thread.
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Can boot persistent liveUSB from laptops but not desktops

    Have you tried also booting live (live-only, not persistent)?

    It is possible that the linux kernel cannot manage the hardware of that computer. But let us hope that you can change some setting in...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Can boot persistent liveUSB from laptops but not desktops

    Maybe a problem with the graphics. Did you try with recovery mode or to add the boot option nomodeset at the grub menu?

    Thanks for sharing your solution :KS
  12. [SOLVED] Re: Testing USB pen drive with poor write speeds

    The partition table as well as the boot structure of grub (for BIOS mode alias CSM alias legacy mode) are all within the first mibibyte, so wiping it will remove many causes of confusion for the...
  13. [SOLVED] Re: Testing USB pen drive with poor write speeds

    You can use fdisk like that, but I think it is straightforward to remove the whole partition table by wiping the first mibibyte (easy with mkusb). After that most partitioning tools will work (but if...
  14. [SOLVED] Re: Testing USB pen drive with poor write speeds

    I recommend to use sync for all these tests (if run via a shell). If the process itself includes flushing the buffers, the sync command will finish at once, and, when you use it, there will be no...

    Re: Howto make USB boot drives

    @C.S.Cameron,

    I have access to various computers for testing. In UEFI mode all of them can boot most Linux systems when extracted to a FAT32 partition. The same is true for the Windows installer,...
  16. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    If you first loop mount the iso file, then casper/filesystem.squashfs in the iso file, you will find /home. I guess you have extracted all this, so it should be possible to put some files in the home...
  17. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    Wifi settings belongs to the system, and you would have to store the relevant file(s) in your home and copy files to where they belong in the system for this to happen. Maybe not easy, but should be...
  18. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    General description

    It works for with the standard user to have only home-rw (and not writable alias casper-rw).

    $ sudo parted -s "/dev/sdc" print
    Model: OCZ-AGIL ITY3 (scsi)
    Disk /dev/sdc:...

    Re: Howto make USB boot drives

    @dezintop,

    Yes, you are welcome to try it. I did some similar tests in VirtualBox (long ago) so I would think it will work, but I have never used vmware.

    Please let us know how it works for you...
  20. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    Try by changing the label 'writable' to 'home-rw' for the ext4 partition.
