[SOLVED] Re: Unable to use ESS with Emacs

It looks like you're moving to the wrong directory. You want to unpack the tarball, then move to that directory, which is likely in your ~/Downloads folder.

    cd ~/Downloads/ess-14.09

Re: Is ubuntu optimised for retina display

I am using Linux Mint 17 on a late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina display. The desktop scales very nicely, but many programs don't. GTK2 elements are microscopic, for instance. It would probably pay...

    [ubuntu] Re: Password prompts

We don't want you to bork your system. But you have the perfect right to if you desire. :) In respect of that, here's a blog post that should explain how to accomplish your goal. <snip>

[SOLVED] Re: Unable to use ESS with Emacs

I can only help you with installing emacs and the ESS addon. I have no familiarity with R or any related statistics language.
Emacs as you know can be installed correctly with

Re: [ubuntu] Macbook Pro 11,1 (2013 Haswell Retina)

    Bump.

Is there any solution for suspend on the 11.1 Macbook Pro? As rainwalker says, it uses Intel Iris graphics, not Nvidia.
Currently I get a completely black screen when I select suspend or...

Re: Help me choose a smartphone

My new Nexus 4 should be here in a couple days, so I haven't used it yet, but for $250 for the 16 GB model, it's a pretty much matchless price.
The lack of microSD card slot bugs me too, but it...

    Re: IamNewToLinux

No one will force a post-PC world into existence. For actual work and productivity it is still impossible to beat laptops/desktops for many fields.

Re: I can't go 100% free, libre, open source

A healthy dose of pragmatism is invaluable when trying to use free software. If it works for me, I'll use it in preference to a nonfree program. If I really need something that is not free, I will...
  10. Re: Please have a look at my Star OS concepts and tell me what you think

The concepts are innovative and interesting. I am not sure if I would use it or not, but I wholeheartedly approve of creative approaches to GNU/Linux. I do like your revisions and timeline concept-...

Re: Want to build my own OS using Linux Kernel

Linux From Scratch is the way to truly make your own distro (the rest are just existing distros rebranded.)

Re: Your installer destroyed my hard drive

That's a real shame, and I hope you file a bug report if indeed it is an Ubuntu error, but-

That's asking for it. :( Always back up before doing any kind of partitioning.

Re: Lack of desktop environments in one system

What? You *can* install any DE from the Ubuntu repositories, but that doesn't make the derivatives pointless. What if you want a system with only what you need for your DE, and not all the...
  15. Re: My experiences with certain desktop environments.

Hey Roasted. :) Nice write-up; as a previous user of Gnome Shell who has now moved to XFCE (lighter weight) I couldn't agree more. :)
I'm keeping my eye on RazorQT though; I am liking the...
  16. Re: Now that the Ubuntu Edge has failed can we please stop with the mobile stuff?

I would have liked to see it go through, but oh well. The desktop-on-the-mobile idea is absolutely brilliant IMO and should be pursued hotly. Even if only as an Android app, for starters.

I find Mint/Ubuntu fits that bill fairly nicely, as it comes with about all the software I need OOTB.

  24. [ubuntu] Re: What is the best version of Linux to install on an 8 GB flash drive?

Depends on the computer specs, but any distro should run from an 8 GB flash drive, pretty much. Err on the side of lightness since you'll be running it through a USB connection.
  25. Re: SolydXK: Nice young Debian based distro for beginners

    Lol.
I alternate between using a fork of a fork (Mint 13) and eating with my fingers (Debian Wheezy). :)
