Re: How much RAM do I have?

I use a little app found in the repositories, htop. It's sort of a graphics top command but i find it easier to understand. It also shows how many processor cores you have and how busy they are.
  2. Re: Create a Full Install USB of Windows 10?

There are some pretty fast USB flash drives out, Sandisk Extreme is one I remember though that's been several years ago. they won't be the cheapest things going though.

Re: Migrating from Intel CPU to AMD one

If you haven't done so, I'd install the latest BIOS update, or perhaps the 2nd to newest in case there are flaws lurking in the newest BIOS version. Doing so fixed a couple niggles on my 2nd gen...
  4. Re: New PC build but Linux will not boot correctly

I agree with the others, upgrade the BIOS unless it's pretty recent. I generally don't load the latest unless it's been out for a while, I flash 1 version old. If there are problems with that one,...

Re: Install old laptops on Ubuntu?

First Spoodle2, good on you for helping those less privileged. In addition to the 32/64 bit issue, make sure the wifi is supported without extraordinary effort. Ubuntu has an 'additional drivers'...
  6. Re: upgraded to 20.04.1 LTS, ttf-mscorefonts-installer issues

Does having MS fonts installed help with the .docx -> .odt -> . docx editing? I find it easy enough to install MS fonts and feel like doing so provides one less thing to go wrong when interacting...

[SOLVED] Re: Is it time to buy a new DVD burner ?

Wouldn't those capacities be bluray? Bluray M-discs are available but are not cheap, thanks Hollywood. I've wondered about those for long term archiving. M-disc DVD drives and media are much more...

  9. [all variants] Re: HP Deskjet All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer Compatibility

If your distro doesn't include it, I'd recommend installing system-config-printer, it's found in the repositories. Then start it from a terminal or command window (alt+f2). I find this more...

[ubuntu] Re: older Lenovo sl500 laptop support

    Happy Holidays Arthur
I don't see any indication the in inxi output of a bluetooth device. Sometimes bluetooth and WiFi are supplied by the same device, I don't know that this is the case on your...
  11. Re: What is the red dot next to the icons in Favorites on my 18.04 desktop?

Libreoffice is excellent at recovering from those brain shorts, thank goodness.
  12. [all variants] Re: can I use a MacOS printer driver in Ubuntu?

I assume you've tried just connecting the printer and see if it's recognized? I've seen some reports with Canon printers and multifunctions that simply connecting them and turning them on was all...

Re: Have you upgraded to 20.04?

My experience with a Ryzen machine is that 20.04 is more stable than 18.04. 18.04 was a real problem for me with an Asrock B350 board and APU (Ryzen 3 2200G). I had enough problems - mostly video...
  14. Re: USB 3.0 port randomly refuses to detect devices

Not to mention that orange juice is acidic. One thing I might try just for grins is to plug a USB hub (if you have one) into the laptop then plug different devices into the hub. See if that helps...
  15. Re: Computer doesn't always resume from suspend

How would 20.04 be running a 4.8.10 kernel? I'm running 20.04.1 and my kernel is 5.4.0-54. And yes, in my experience newer kernels work much better on Ryzen machines.

    Re: Understanding mAh?

That's what it seems like to me. 1 amp hour = 1000 milli amp hour. Something that has a 1000 of x HAS to be better than something that has only 1 of x, doesn't it? Taking advantage of consumer...

Re: Can I Let Windows 10 Go?

I haven't come across any Windows 10 only web sites. I have come across some sites that really only work with Chromium based browsers, I keep Vivaldi for those. I've also found that for sites that...
  19. Re: Newest generation 2020 notebook - bad idea? Advice please which hardware to buy.

If I were buying a new laptop, I'd look at "business class" machines for Linux comparability. What follows is my opinion not document-able fact. Business class machines tend to use higher quality...

Re: Can I Let Windows 10 Go?

As others have said, sometimes there is no work around to having Windows. I have a couple devices that require monthly database updates. One is distributed as an .exe file, the other uses a Windows...
  22. Re: Which brand of printers should I stick to?

I've had good success with Brother using their installer script. Older inkjet MFD, MFC-6490CW and HL-3170xxx. They're both wired networked and have static network addresses. I use...

  24. [ubuntu] Re: Install Canon Pixma G2110 All-in-One Printer

  25. Re: Are there 32bit Linux versions still supported?

So true. When I first installed noscript I was amazed at how many sites want to run scripts on a site like NFL.com or CNN.com. It can require patience to figure out which scripts are required to make...
