    If the above doesn't do anything

    sudo snort -c /etc/snort/snort.conf

    Are you doing a nmap scan from another computer?

    nmap -sS target

    Does your snort box have a firewall?

    iptables -L

    Is snort running?

    If your seeing traffic in the snort alert log files then you need to edit the config & setup mysql.

    Right now it's logging to a file. In order for base to work it needs to log to a database.
