    for some reason i needed to add

    client ntlmv2 auth = yes
    to smb.conf

    and mount is with cifs rather than smbfs

    why did i need to add that and why does smbfs work...

    In theory you could download something and put it in a shared partition...

    one thing you could try is to install ubuntu again
    when ubuntu installs properly you should have access to both windows and ubuntu.
