Have you tried hitting ESC while GRUB is loading and then booting to RECOVERY MODE, then pick XFIX. This will attempt to fix X. I doubt it will work but it can't hurt.

If you wait till after the POST and hit ESC before GRUB finishes counting down, you can boot in recovery mode. From there you can execute the xfix command.
