  1. [ubuntu] Re: Compile Errors installing VMWare Workstation 7.1.0 under Ubuntu 11.04

    I can't remember which version of VMware Workstation supports Ubuntu 11.04 (could be 7.1.3?) but, you'd be best to download the latest release and see if that helps.
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Unable to install postfix atal: open database /etc/aliases.db: Permission denied

    You could try:

    cd /etc
    sudo postmap aliases

    This will create the aliases.db file that you're missing, and should give it the right permissions. Both /etc/aliases and /etc/aliases.db...

    [ubuntu] Re: Backuppc and file / folder permissions

    Maybe not the best solution there is but, I have specific modules defined for backuppc to access as root:

    [backuppc-etc]
    comment = BackupPC Connector /etc
    path = /etc
    ...
  6. [SOLVED] Re: Problems passing parameters to rsync in script

    Did you put the '-s' switch on rsync when you re-tried, or did you copy & paste all my text?

    I had a quite squint at the man page and it said it was necessary for paths containing whitespace...
  7. [SOLVED] Re: Problems passing parameters to rsync in script

    No problem, gave me something to think about for a few minutes! I don't know why the quotes have to be around $BFULL in the rsync string but, they do. Tried different ways and all fail unless I...
  8. [SOLVED] Re: Problems passing parameters to rsync in script

    Actually, the more I think about what I've suggested, the less faith I have!

    BROOT="/home/keta"
    BDIR="/backup try"
    BFULL=$BROOT$BDIR

    echo ; echo "BFULL = $BFULL" ; echo #...

  10. Re: Top things to do after installing Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

    Wow, you found a lot of good stuff to do after installing 9.10! You can tell you spent a lot of time doing what you've done alone, nevermind documenting it too! Well done.

    I've got the same issue with a 1000HE model. Google, being my friend, brought me to your thread! lol

    [ubuntu] Re: Concerned about zip files

    Did you zip three files or a folder containing three files? Maybe there were some hidden ones in there that you didn't spot?

    Ummm... I don't remember doing that but, if it works! Plenty of ways to skin the cat!
  19. [ubuntu] Re: Screen is to dark when running on battery

    Not sure... my girlfriend says she doesn't have to change the setting when she boots up her laptop? Maybe I did something when I was playing about on it one day! She's on 8.04......
  20. [ubuntu] Re: Screen is to dark when running on battery

    On the top panel, right click and select "Add to Panel...", then look for "Brightness Applet". You can then adjust your brightness and be able too see the screen comfortably.

    I'm a little more used to taking over "foreign" machines where you don't have the option of "rescue" options... I overly complicated the situation. Thanks to "sisco311" for simplifying the task! :)

    Only reason I gave a 24GB / partition was for big apps that would sit under /opt. Doesn't really matter though; if I rebuilt, I'd reinstall those apps anyway.
