Gnome is changing, no matter what you think of the new Gnome desktop, so do not blame Ubuntu/Canonical for that, and the only sure thing in life except death is change, which is a change, kind of. :)
Do not start new threads, keep your update/upgrade problem in one thread.
Did you do the update before upgrading? That was asked about in your other thread.
Good luck with your upgrade project, but you should really consider a reinstall, these old Ubuntu versions are not longer supported and even if you should succeed, the risk of getting a borked system...
