Thanks, this script works perfectly, probably works with other i386 packages you're having trouble installing also. The lack of an i386 version of xdg-utils seems to be what's causing the issue.........

It's possible, but i can reproduce your rfkill list simply by toggling off wifi on my laptop panel
Wifi switch on
rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no...
I'm guessing you rebooted after doing rfkill unblock?
It's saying your wifi is hard blocked though, if that's correct, it suggests that it has been physically turned off on your laptop..... does...
Have you recently installed any firewall software... like firestarter for example? Firestarter only seems to work with either wifi or ethernet, you have to reconfigure it when you want to...
Thank you Cog, this utility is part of the cpufrequtils package, it definitely helps shorten the command to something a bit more managable
sudo cpufreq-set -g performance

Question. Is it only sluggish for the first couple minutes after booting? What i mean is like the first time you try to look at a file folder or open a program, it seems like it's taking much longer...
