I had similar choppy audio. I think it _may_ be fixed now by bumping up the priority of the pulseaudio process, and killing mprime (background process using spare cpu cycles www.mersenne.org).

Yeah, I've put together 8 or 10 systems now under ubuntu, and this is BY FAR the most trouble I've ever had with a nVidia card. Usually they just work.
