You tried to edit the file as a normal user, but you need to be admin. To open gedit as root, issue the following from the command line, or enter it at the Alt-F2 runner thingy.

Without ntlmaps, I'm able to surf in firefox, after authenticating via the challenge that pops up.

You meant "testdisk" instead of "parted," right? Never mind, sorry. I re-read, and you meant exactly what you wrote.

Oh, and FWIW, it was sda3 that I deleted in gparted. (That's the partition that held these logical volumes.)
