If you want a much more painfree experience with Linux on G3/G4/G5 hardware just skip this outdated distro and use another one. Also G3/G4/G5 PPC is no longer supported by Ubuntu.

Falls das noch von Bedeutung ist nach der langen Zeit: Ja, das ist ein yaboot Problem. Der Installer kriegt die automatische Konfiguration da nicht immer hin. Die einfachste Lösung wird sein, wenn du...
You could try Ubuntu MATE 16.04.3 (klick). Some Mesa color bugs have been fixed in 12.0.x. As the point-releases of the long term supported versions update the graphics stack, it is possible that...
Last supported Ubuntu-PPC Version is 16.04.3: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/releases/16.04.3/release/
Old PPC (and 680x0) Apple gear is legacy hardware and should be taken care of with the same effort other people put in their Retro-Systems. At least if you want to run your hardware for another...
Just using the installer won't be enough on PPC machines most of the time. ;)
Your boot configuration the installer created is in /etc/yaboot.conf. Most propably you need to edit this file...
What does sudo ybin -v tell you when you write your /etc/yaboot.conf to disk?
It really took me a while to get this going... But with help from #gentoo-powerpc IRC, information from various forums and https://bugs.freedesktop.org I finally made it! :guitar: Some things were...
@este.el.paz:
The G5's have SATA HDs (keep in mind to use ideally SATA-1 drivers or SATA-2 at most, the SATA-controller is very picky with SATA-3 HDs). There is IDE, but only used for connecting...
I would go for the PowerMac G5 11,2 air cooled models. Faster and by far cheaper than used AmigaOne X1000's would be. ;) The are robust, more silent than the 7,2/7,3 models and got PCIe-slots.
Glad you made it dude! ;)
@alexaxl12: You really should try the current 16.04.2 from my link, as it has a more recent kernel and graphics stack.
Better use the current Ubuntu MATE 16.04.2 from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/xenial/daily-live/current/
It has the more recent mesa 12.0.x graphics stack.
Yep, your partition layout is a mess. :grin:
As far as I can see you only have two big Apple Partitions where your OSX could be, /dev/sda11 (131.2G) and /dev/sdb10 (232.8G). So macosx=/dev/sdb10...
What .iso did you use for installation on your G5? AFAIK the only current Ubuntu-Distro for ppc is Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS.
@csae2608: This specific issue is already fixed in upstream mesa >= 12.0.x. If you run Ubuntu MATE 16.04.2 LTS or any other distro with mesa >= 12.0.x you are just fine.
Ubuntu is systemd-based for a long time, so why not simply use timedatectl set-ntp yes. ;-) You can check the settings with timedatectl status. Or do you have a specific need for ntpd?
@este.el.paz, luigiburdo:
If you want current software & kernels on you ppc-hardware you can always run Gentoo. stable and testing packackes are a bit behind amd64, but not much. At default...
Had the same annoying problem too, but I figured it out.
On my german keyboard the "@"-sign is on the 3rd keylevel of the "L"-Key. Then you only need to know how to reach the 3rd level. Go to the...
I am using a PowerBook 5,8, just like yours, as my main laptop. The best Linux experience I got with Ubuntu MATE 16.10. On versions before 16.10 2D/3D-acceleration is not working properly. The...
Short answer: yes.
Ubuntu LTS (long term support) versions will receive component updates (hardware support, browser, et.c) for 5 years for a specific LTS version. AMD/Intel-Computers are supported...
Yes, I took my time to refine the config a few times to get the hardware of my G5 7,3 and G5 11,2 running and to set the appropriate options for running systemd. The rest is basic network...
