Go to your profile on Minecraft.net and upload it there to change your character skin. Changing the actually char.png will only effect your game client if anything.

If install 10.10 over 11.10 will it allow me to keep my files? Or will I have to back them up and start a new?
Just install Windows to the 50 Gb partition and re install GRUB 2 which is a boot loader. I have done this many many times. Works like clockwork.
All I can say is try the instructions again. Be sure to wait for a while it will eventually sort things out.

Can't mount sda1 or boot to it. So I tried this from my live usb...
$ sudo e2fsck -f -b 32768 -y /dev/sdb1
It did some stuff and had crazy matrix code and it is now just repeating "y"
