    Why are you trying to run it as root? Not normal in ubuntu. Was it installed in the root user folder?

    Do you recall what the updates were which seemed to cause it to stop working?

    Could you open a terminal CTR+ALT+T

    run these 2 commands one at a time



    and post the results back. That should identify your wifi hardware.
