  2. [SOLVED] Re: Problem with multi-head configuration after do-release-upgrade from 18.04.6 to 20

well, it turns out it was a good idea to go back and look at what xorg.conf was being generated as with the fresh install. It turns out, it was not generating a xorg.conf at all. So I upgraded, and...
  3. [SOLVED] Problem with multi-head configuration after do-release-upgrade from 18.04.6 to 20.04

Hi all, I am attempting to upgrade my install of Xubuntu 18.04.6 to 20.04 in light of the former's EOL coming up soon. I am using the 'do-release-upgrade' command line tool, and it is going okay,...
  4. Re: Are Lubuntu and Xubuntu stable and supported enough?

The base installation still gets 5 years of updates. It's just stuff specific to Xubuntu itself that's only supported for 3 years. I've got a 16.04 system that just got a kernel update today.
  5. Re: How to set my own DNS servers in 18.04?

Still having issues with this. Setting the file as immutable is only good so long as I don't need to use resolvconf, which some packages are apparently dependent upon.
  6. [xubuntu] Re: "Additional Drivers" switching back to open-source drivers not working right.

Thanks for the tip on the FullCompositionPipeLine option, that took care of the video tearing.

Still having trouble with it booting the login-prompt on the TV instead of the monitor, but I guess...
  7. [xubuntu] "Additional Drivers" switching back to open-source drivers not working right.

I wasn't really sure where the best section for help with this would be. Kind of a mix of multimedia, hardware and desktop environment problem.

    Distribution: Xubuntu 18.04.2 TLS
    XFCE: Ver 4.12...
  8. Re: How to set my own DNS servers in 18.04?

I have a custom DNS server with rules that I have defined on the network which I want to use. So whenever it switches back to the default DNS provided by my ISP, the hostnames I have defined will no...
  9. Re: How to set my own DNS servers in 18.04?

That is what I tried, but for some reason every few minutes ( maybe 15? ) the configuration gets reset back to using my ISP's default DNS server. When I right click the nm-applet and reconnect my...
  10. Re: The "Keep Everything Upgraded All The Time" craze is annoying

I think security researchers and software developers in particular seem to have a great imagination when it comes to determining what bugs are actually imminently dangerous--they have to in order to...
  11. How to set my own DNS servers in 18.04?

This is driving me nuts. I have looked up several different guides pertaining to how to set my own DNS servers in 18.04, but every 15 minutes it gets set back to some default that I can't even...
  12. The "Keep Everything Upgraded All The Time" craze is annoying

I get so annoyed with this. Everyone acts like if you use a version of software below the current release, hackers are going to break into your computer and kidnap your mother or something. Half...
  13. Re: Need help selecting lightweight "flavour" to run on old hardware and replace Wind

I wonder if a Live distribution and using Google Docs would be sufficient. I have basically replaced my need for LO with Google Docs (including Slides and Sheets). Meanwhile the live form factor...

    Re: a C related question

Oh whoops you're right, I goofed. But what I am saying is take a look at the difference between that page's manual file for fgets and one on a local system. On my local system at least, it doesn't...

    Re: a C related question

You might need to install them with 'manpages-dev'.

You can also just type 'man *function*' in Google and get the same type of manual pages. Often times they're more up-to-date or have example...

Re: Windows is not what it's for.

You know honestly, I feel like that would have more utility.

I've been using Linux now as my sole operating system for a long time. I don't really remember the last time I absolutely couldn't...

  19. [SOLVED] Re: privileged mode ignored on ubuntu's bash

Well, the first thing that pops into my mind in terms of, "This shape is not like the others," is that Ubuntu does not have a password on the root account, meaning a user cannot 'su' to root. Pretty...
  20. Re: Convincing parents to switch to Linux

Yeah people are always asking me if I can "re-install Windows" on their computer. Even the most basic users tend to have some small proprietary piece of software they're not willing to put up with...
  21. Re: Looking for forum to discuss 'sed'

You could try in the Development and Programming section here. Or perhaps something like r/bash (subreddit for bash scripting)

The thing is you're not going to really find a forum specifically...
  22. [SOLVED] How to download OpenSSL debug symbols?

I'm working with OpenSSL's EVP library and was checking for leaks with valgrind, and had a problem where the output information stopped with OpenSSL's functions. Someone on reddit told me to install...
  23. [ubuntu] Re: Isn't the lack of https in the repositories a security risk?

No I wouldn't think so. You're downloading publicly available software, so privacy/secrecy is of no concern. The only other thing HTTPS would provide is protection against a MITM manipulation of...

    Re: debugging segmentaiton violation

Do you have the source for this program or are you using a binary?

Can you start a new project, save it successfully, and load it on the new system?

This is just a hunch, but I am thinking you...
  25. Re: does Linux have defense against printer cartridge scams?

I think that's probably more the case for consumer-level printers. It's honestly less trouble just to toss those ones when they start having problems. I mean, I'm pretty technically proficient; I...
