However Ubuntu needs Master Boot Record partition scheme...

i tried this on a MacBook Pro 8,3 (same hardware as the MacBook Pro 8,2 except 17-inch) and got nearly the same result...
i've been trying to install the Radeon proprietary...

the bootloader should be installed at:
/
on your Ubuntu partition.
Make sure you also elect to format the Ubuntu partition (ext4 is best)
also install refit (or refind)

it may be trying to activate Unity in 3D; maybe you could set it to go directly to 2D because i wonder if the intel GMA 950 is even supported to run Unity3D...

That was never a speed demon...
But i'll bet even an entry-level SSD will make it fly... The interface is SATA (1.5Gbs) so no problems there...
Plus, if it's for your mother, i imagine she doesn't...
