Re: Question about the future of Unity

Gnome has moved far beyond ' the "good ol' days" of pull down menus'. Unity basically forked off of Gnome 3, several years ago. Gnome Shell is now quite nice, and with the plethora of extensions...

Re: Not the end of Unity

Gnome is a whole software stack and Desktop Environment. Many other DE's/Window Managers run 'on top of Gnome' or use components of its plumbing. The actual Gnome User Interface is called Gnome...

Re: Stellarium graphics issue in 16.04

    Hi,

Newer Stellaria don't like older graphics HW. At some point they switched how they did graphics - I think it was when they went from 0.12 to 0.13. On my old Compaq Presario (ca. 2008), I have...
  4. Re: Does using a Ubuntu Live CD modify an NTFS partition in any way?

I have dual booted Windows and Linux for years, and have never seen this behavior. I essentially use my Windows partition, which of course in NTFS, as a data partition to share between Windows and...

Re: copy and paste issue with firefox

"this is so dumb... stupid bugs like these are why people use windows. "

This added nothing helpful to your query.

There is no bug, as others have pointed out. It behaves exactly the same way...
  6. [SOLVED] Re: System management requires a better file manager than Files!

I agree with what Bab1 said. However, if you want sort of a middle ground, I've used FileRunner for many many years as my power file manager. I agree that 'Files' (aka Nautilus), is pitifully...
  7. [SOLVED] Re: Where is an authenticated site to download Lubuntu?

I always get my installation images at cdimage.ubuntu.com. All the flavors are there, including Lubuntu, of course.

    Re: Ubuntu Gnome 3.20 or 3.22 ?

I am also finding Ubuntu Gnome to be quite solid. I'm glad Nautilus was finally let loose to find the latest version. Everything seems to be working just fine, even Evolution, which is at 3.21.91....

    [SOLVED] Re: Nautilus (Files) broken?

Solved. Some nautilus-related updates came in, but the problem persisted. I deleted .config/nautilus and .local/share/nautilus, and all seems to be working fine now.

    [SOLVED] Nautilus (Files) broken?

I made a fresh install of the latest build, and when I try to run 'Files', the window comes up for a second or two and then disappears. Launching from the command line yields:

    *** BUG ***
    In...

    [SOLVED] Re: LibreOffice

That said, I had no trouble installing, and now using daily, LO 5.2 from the debs at their website. Didn't even know there was a PPA to get the latest version.
  12. [SOLVED] Re: sudo apt-get update stucks at "fetched n Kb in ms"

Yes, something is wrong with backports, and if you disable it, all is well.

I don't know about the iPod issue, but the music that I purchased on iTunes all plays fine on Linux music players (provided you install the appropriate codecs). I think anything after 2011 should be...

Re: Yakkety Proposed up and running

I take it you are not running Gnome Shell, or you'd see the others.

Just wait, and the packages will get in sync and dependencies solved.

But you probably shouldn't be running with the...

Re: Yakkety Proposed up and running

For several days now, among the other updates coming through, there have been 11 packages held back. These are 9 *-heimdal packages, plus gnome-shell-extensions and usb-modeswitch-data.

    Is anyone...

[ubuntu] Re: How to adjust mouse wheel scroll?

As far as I know, there is no permanent fix. I agree that it's a pain, and would love to find a permanent fix. Perhaps there's some X configuration magic that would do it, but I haven't found it.

[ubuntu] Re: How to adjust mouse wheel scroll?

Are you dual-booting with Windows, and do you have a MS wireless mouse? If so, after rebooting into Ubuntu after a Windows session, you can just unplug and replug the USB transceiver (or shutdown and...
  18. [SOLVED] Re: Set hardware clock to local time at shutdown?

    This seems to do it:

    sudo hwclock --systohc --localtime

I thought I had tried it earlier, and found it not to persist across boots, but it seems that it does.
  19. [SOLVED] Set hardware clock to local time at shutdown?

It seems as though the default behavior in Ubuntu has changed with Xenial back to saving the system clock to the hardware clock as UTC at shutdown. This obviously causes problems when dual-booting...

Re: I need a simple backup tool
