    I believe that if you booted off the XP installation CD, went into Recovery mode, and at the console typed the following two commands:
    fixmbr
    fixboot

    then rebooted, it will boot directly into XP...

    Could it be something with your monitor or BIOS? Sometimes there are options to enter low power states in the BIOS (more common) and the monitors themselves (less common).
