try by removing the modem manager, don't worry you can reinstall it .
sudo apt-get autoremove modemmanager

are you using wifi?

it could be a hardware specific problem.

you can try xubuntu or lubuntu rather than ubuntu which is designed for newer pcs with better specs. lubuntu would be the lightest of all in the ubuntu family.

i have been looking for a similar thing and never found anything satisfactory except pdfstudio . it is better than anything else but not free. so i +1 both the above posters for their opinions.

use bleach bit (root) to clean your system often, untill you reinstall with a better partition scheme.

go to personal file sharing from the dash and allow bluetooth sharing by marking related check boxes and you are good to go!

it could be a bad hdd too, do you have any i/o problems in windows?

how much /tmp is enough for smooth operation of tasks like video encoding, graphics designing, creating , editing pdf etc..

actually i'm very much satisfied with my current setup , the only problem is /tmp mounted on a separate 7gb hdd partition, i just want to either grow the partition or mount /tmp under the parttion...

the problem is with the partitioning of your second hdd, it is a gpt partition. so you may have to repartition the drive and reinstall ubuntu.
