copy the results from you first command into text editor, and use sudo apt-get install with the resulting packages pasted on the end.
do you boot into grub or into windows bootloader?
unfortunatly the only way that i know to make the home partition a different drive is to do it on the partitioning part of the install. if the disk is formatted in fat or fat32 or ntfs it will need...
when you installed did you want to make the 16gb drive the home partition? or do you just want to mount it? how is the drive formatted? is it a usb or a sd card?
check to see if the device is set wrong in device manager, and the bios.
many have tried here, but we're pretty non judgemental.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

try using linux mint it has all that installed by default
first that how -to is out of date. it's for edgy or dapper you want ibex or hardy. so that's problem number 1. try using rhythmbox, it can do this by default.
