Ok, thanks for the insight. :)
Hi there,
If I had a small solid state drive (32 gigs or so) along with a much larger SATA drive, with Ubuntu installed on th SSD and /home on the SATA drive, would there be a significant speed...

I highly doubt a virus is stopping you from browsing web sites. Even if it is windows. If you're using Firefox, this might help:

Did you remember to reboot or at least restart X after you changed the icons?
Does your monitor have an "Auto Adjust" button or something similar?
Proxy server anyone?
Yes, but prepare for slowness.
Is lynx what you're looking for?

It would work, it would just be very slow. You might want to look into xubuntu (it's made for older hardware).

Try a different mirror. If you still can't find it, you may have to build it from source.

It looks like vlc doesn't think it's a DVD. Vlc should be able to detect DVDs even without dvd decrypting libraries such as libdvdcss2. Are you sure it's mounted in /media/cdrom0? It could be under...
Launch totem or vlc (whatever you're using) from the command line. When the window closes, post whatever it spits out into the terminal.

Then, sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
You need libdvdcss2. It's technically illegal in the United States to decrypt DVDs, but it's not hard to find.
If you need to avoid bloat, forget GNOME and KDE and install Fluxbox, IceWM, or TWM.
There is a hidden folder in your home folder called .themes. You can see it by pressing control + h. GTK themes get installed there. In the folder .icons (also a hidden directory in your home...
Without those, you wouldn't be able to do things like connect to the internet, print, change the volume, update your system, etc. I would just leave them be.
You might want to check this out: (it applies to Ubuntu as well)

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
