    Re: Comparing files via dates

If the directories are supposed to be identical, use rsync to put the newer file onto the other side. This is exactly what rsync does.
If you just want a list of the files that would be replaced,...
  2. Re: How to secure wi-fi seeded from an Android device to an Ubuntu laptop

All wifi is non-secure. We learned that a few months ago. Every wifi standard from 1998 including wifi-6 have security problems. That means the only way to secure wifi is to use a VPN, network...
  3. [xubuntu] Re: KVM switch not bringing screens back to life

My KVM is fairly old. It has a push-button on the front that cycles through the 4 ports or if I press Scroll-Lock twice, there is a beep, and pressing 1, 2, 3, or 4 will switch to that KVM port. ...
  4. Re: Which VM and setup should i choose to run a demanding program like Gigapixil AI?

I've been watching that project for a few years. Every demo I've seen has lasted a few minutes, then crashed. It is impressive for 2 minutes at a time.

Gotta love that. Every release includes...

I don't know anything about gdm3 (I don't use it), but suspect that doesn't run with a userid. It runs as root but without any normal environment, which is probably NOT desirable.

    That means the...
  6. Re: Need help with guidance on school career path

These sorts of question really need lots of different feedback from many different people. Everyone gets to a career point in different ways. There is no "right" way. There are lots and lots of...

[ubuntu] Re: Confusion about disk usage

A search for "btrfs out of space: found this : https://ohthehugemanatee.org/blog/2019/02/11/btrfs-out-of-space-emergency-response/
That link, which I've never seen before, has some commands to see...
  8. Re: Which VM and setup should i choose to run a demanding program like Gigapixil AI?

It is QXL (qxl), not OXL. ;) What needs to be done depends on the guest OS. For Linux desktops, the qxl drivers are there and "just work". For Windows, you'll need to install the Redhat drivers. ...

Re: How to protect accounts from hacking?

For most people, using 2FA devices blocks account hacks completely. Avoid using a program on a cell device for 2FA. You want to use a separate USB key. Google did a study and found something like...
  10. Re: Which VM and setup should i choose to run a demanding program like Gigapixil AI?

WINE is an API layer that emulates the Windows API for Windows programs. It is incomplete and will always be incomplete. Certain subsystems of Windows will never work in WINE. Every year it gets a...

[ubuntu] Re: Confusion about disk usage

If it was me, I'd learn from a btrfs tutorial. All the commands will be spelled out there. It isn't like they are hidden. Additionally, everyone is in the "manpages" i.e. help files on your system...

[ubuntu] Re: Confusion about disk usage

I've never even played with BTRFS, so don't know that any of those commands are useful. When I learned that du and df output wasn't telling the truth on btrfs, that made it much less interesting to...
  14. [xubuntu] Re: is there any way to automatically lock screen without xscreensaver?

There are downsides to not having a single company responsible for all software shipped with an OS release.

Linux is a bazaar, not a cathedral. Our distros and GUIs are a loose confederacy of...

[ubuntu] Re: Confusion about disk usage

Besides what CharlesA says, there are lots of ways for storage to appear different from what we know is on the system.

Some of my most used commands are:

    lsblk -e 7 -o...
  16. [xubuntu] Re: is there any way to automatically lock screen without xscreensaver?

The GUI isn't part of the "OS".
GUIs are just another program, like a calculator. There are standards for what a GUI Window Manager should provide, ICCCM2 2.0. Some of the newest DEs don't follow...
  17. Re: Recent update has changed Alt-F2 when you drop to command line

All I know is <c>-<a>-F7 gets me to the GUI on this 18.04 system. All the others end up on consoles.
The same happens on a 20.04 install here. It was a fresh install, not an upgrade. c-a-F7.

    I...
  18. Re: Recent update has changed Alt-F2 when you drop to command line

Usually, there are multiple pseudo-ttys. F1-F10. Try them all. F7 is historically the "GUI" session.
BTW, it is possible that Wayland changes this, so I don't know what happens in that situation....
  19. [gnome] Re: 20.04 - best method for remote desktop on local network and remote network (inter

x2go works into 20.04 for me from other Ubuntu and Windows systems, but I don't have any apple stuff.
Also, I don't use Gnome3 as a DE on either the client or the server. I know Mate works. Think...
  20. Re: Which VM and setup should i choose to run a demanding program like Gigapixil AI?

VMM is just a GUI over KVM. It uses libvirt, but under the covers, it is all KVM/QEMU.

I don't know of any GUI method to setup IOMMU passthru to a guest with virt-manager. It just isn't a...

[SOLVED] Re: Network Manager and VPN

  24. [SOLVED] Re: Any routers that accept USB HDs formatted in ext4?

Let's think about this for a moment.
Connecting storage to a WAN router. Does that seem like a good idea?

My common sense "smells bad" test says no. Certain things don't make sense.
