What reason could it really be to not have this in? Makes no sense.

I am going to stick with Ubuntu 10.04 until 2013. It works really well on my notebook and is stable as a rock.

In 2013 I will compare Ubuntu and Debian, winner take all :D

I have a problem very much like this. What I found out over a period of time was the drive was going bad. Later the drive started to not even open, mechanically failing.

Yes, empty is right. If you do need anything you can get it from Linux if needed.

Recovery partitions and restore CD are why I have not got a normal Windows CDs with a computer since about 1998....

Well I looked up your computer. Originally it came with Restore CDs and a Restore partition on the HD. When the computer would boot, you could just pres F10 a few times and the restore would start....

Mine is an HP so it says Pavilion A767C on it. Something like that.

You need to defrag first so all the data on the partition you resize is in one place. It reduces the chance of corrupting data.
