    that's not weird, but called "kexec system call" - it's a kernel-feature, that allows you to simply reboot into another kernel, you skip everything else (like bios/efi and also grub)

    according to a few things i've been reading/hearing, the MBP5,4 (15") and the 17" have a different codec on their hda-chip, compared to the 13" 5,5.

    hard to say. however there are a few things you can check:



    sudo lsmod | grep snd


    if that shows a bunch of lines including snd_hda_intel, the driver got loaded.

    completely forgot to tell you guys:

    takashi fixed it as far as this:
    - digital out works ootb
    - built-in speakers work TOO!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D
    - even "surround" seems to be an extra speaker...

    Well not 'compiz', but yes: my kwin is using compositing. so yeah - alpha-channel and wobbly windows, and exposé and all that jazz. ;) works perfectly.
