    I reinstalled 14.04.
    I burned a copy of 16.04.1 . I gave it a try but while I hear it wrrrrrrr the screen stays blank.
    I'll try again when that bug is fixed: No Display ( that's a biggy huh?!)

    I think I chose the option to install the proprietary drivers later (I was doing two things at once). I'll try to boot to a command promt (I can't recall which key to push?)

    Yes the settings are correct as I have used them in the laptop.

    When I did previous installs the network was up and running attached to the router and so needed no setting up so the PC is at a lower level?
    I don't understand that bit but maybe that static...

    Yes, I have put in all the settings [select Address > Add ;Select Net mask >Add ; Select Gateway> Add then DNS and alternate DNS separated by a comma].
    Just tried it again: Save is greyed...

    Yes, the settings are correct but the save button greys as soon as I select manual (before entering the settings).

    Same hardware; same distro on dvd: worked last time for months and months ...

    Maybe my boot repair was repaired when I reinstalled a second time as no bios_grub flag is ticked in gparted?
