    Re: Unremovable old kernel

Use Synaptic. It will show you "Not installed (residual config)" packages that you can purge.

    Re: Unremovable old kernel

Use Synaptic if you're struggling with commands. It makes thing much easier. Just be careful not to remove anything you don't want to.
  3. Re: Problems with Dell 5575 AMD/Radeon

If it was me, I'd remove plymouth and call it a day. I don't even have it installed on my system (Debian sid). Pretty boot screens are nice, but considering how fast most systems boot nowadays,...
  4. [server] Re: Can't retrive and install driver for Alfa model AWUS036HN

It should work without manual intervention. Please get more info: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370108
  5. [xubuntu] Re: Streaming video from xubuntu 21.04

mkv is a container. It can hold a lot of different formats, some of which your TV may not support. To see exactly what type of video/audio the file contains, use mediainfo:

    mediainfo filename

Re: Older CPU out-pacing newer one

Have you tried disabling "Baloo" (file indexing)? Sometimes, that thing goes crazy with disk usage due to bugs.
EDIT: I think it's under KDE's "Search" Settings
  8. Re: How install video card drivers (i945, 8400, 3650) for 20.04 and 21.04 ?

Well, then they don't need additional drivers..

Re: AMD C50 cpu & AMD 6250 onboard

No, and even if you did manage to get fglrx/Catalyst installed, it wouldn't do what you want. fglrx had better 3D performance in some scenarios, but its support for video decoding was awful.
  10. Re: Swapping? Computer gets very slow when RAM is full

If you're one of those people that loves to have 100 tabs open in Firefox/Thunderbird, 16GB RAM is a good idea.
Putting swap on an SSD is a bad idea if the swap gets frequent use, because it can...

Re: OpenGL broken on Lubuntu 20.04

Try a LiveUSB to see if the same thing happens. It could be the GPU failing..

[SOLVED] Re: amdgpu-pro for RX 6700XT?

I would have tried the oibaf PPA for such a new card.
  15. [xubuntu] Re: What is using up my hard drive space?

There are a lot of things you can rip out from a Xubuntu install to save space - strange fonts, Libreoffice (use abiword instead), cups/sane and all the printer drivers if not printing/scanning.
  16. [xubuntu] Re: What is using up my hard drive space?

For a full Xubuntu install? I don't think so. About 10GB is more of a reasonable expectation.

[SOLVED] Re: confused about SATA support levels

No, it's not odd. The Intel H81 chipset supports two SATA 6Gbps and two SATA 3Gbps ports. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/75016/intel-h81-chipset/specifications.html#specs-1-0-5...

  20. [ubuntu] Re: Updates broke API - driver installed but doesnt work. STUMPED

    Initial thought:

    "driver=radeon" means

"radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1" is not working the way you want it to. You need the amdgpu module...
  21. Re: apt - Why does package libnvidia-gl-440:i386 points towards the 450 version?

Yes. It's a transitional package, which means it will point to the newer version. There shouldn't be a need to use an older nvidia driver unless you need a legacy one.
  22. [ubuntu] Re: Radeon™ Software for Ubuntu 20.04

I would not bother with them unless I had a workstation card and was interested in their rocm/opencl capability.

In general, normal users and gamers should stick with the open source drivers.

Re: Nvidia / GPU Video Acceleration

It's not Google's fault. It comes down to Nvidia not supporting VA-API properly, and maybe the devs who wrote the hardware decode accel code insisting on VA-API, when VDPAU would have been better.

Re: Nvidia / GPU Video Acceleration

*Shrug* Don't know what else to tell you. Maybe the VA-API -> VDPAU wrapper is inefficient and not worth it (or even counterproductive) for H.264 with a modern CPU. It hasn't been touched in almost a...
