  1. Re: Taskbars missing in Gnome Flashback on 20.04

It typically doesn't need to be added directly into startup apps so I'd first try:

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-panel

Then either reboot or logout and back in. If the output of that command...
  2. [SOLVED] Re: Using Nemo in Flashback session - no wallpaper

Alberts Muktupāvels provided the answer in this existing bug report:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nemo/+bug/1742193/comments/9

I spent a lot of time in dconf-editor but hadn't...
  3. [SOLVED] Re: Using Nemo in Flashback session - no wallpaper

Those settings were correct, so no joy :(
  4. [SOLVED] Re: Using Nemo in Flashback session - no wallpaper

Thanks. That's certainly a thought. Since as it is I seem to be getting the splash screen I've even considered changing that ............. something in 'plymouth' I think????
  5. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

The latest daily seems to have my Latitude's sorted out. First boot OK, second boot OK, and trying in yet another laptop it's still good so I'd call that "sorted out".
  6. [ubuntu_mate] Re: Live USB displays grub boot menu even on non-uefi machines

That's a bit worrisome to me. Some of these older Intel boards I'm using offer the UEFI boot option but it's such an early version of UEFI it's really just junk. Like DG43xx and DB43xx which are...
  7. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

So, back to testing on the Dell Latitude E6510 with Ubuntu daily 20201015 on a USB created by Start Up Disk Creator in Focal and still no dice so I added a comment here:
    ...
  8. [SOLVED] Re: Using Nemo in Flashback session - no wallpaper

    Just a bump ;)
  9. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

Neither Latitude E6400's or an E6510 will even recognize the image on USB. The E6400's are C2D (both P series and T series cpu's fail), and the E6510 has an i7 M620. I've tried creating the live...
  10. [ubuntu_mate] Re: Live USB displays grub boot menu even on non-uefi machines

It is the daily images I'm talking about. Prior releases all work fine.
  11. [ubuntu_mate] Re: Live USB displays grub boot menu even on non-uefi machines

How can you tell now whether you've booted in UEFI or BIOS mode? I still have some old Intel boards that can be setup either way.
  12. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

I should have read this before posting my question

One dumb question - will it be possible to still use msdos/mbr partition tables if using the "something else" option during installation?
  13. [ubuntu_mate] Live USB displays grub boot menu even on non-uefi machines

Maybe I'm missing something? As I said the live image (via USB) now seems to only boot using the grub menu, like had been the case for UEFI hardware only.

I also can't get a live USB to boot at...
  14. [SOLVED] Using Nemo in Flashback session - no wallpaper

I used to use the flashback session a lot prior to 18.04 and drifted away in favor of Mate and/or KDE Plasma, but it's coming time to upgrade the roughly 4 dozen "other people's" PCs that I help...

Re: Anyone else try Abiword recently?

IMHO they did a really good job with Lithium. The only thing lacking out-of-box in the live version is Cheese or a comparable webcam app.

    Anyone else try Abiword recently?

I always loved abiword for providing absolute simplicity and after getting frustrated with Libre Office today I tried installing it from the repos - yep it's there in 20.04 :D

    It seems to be...

    Anyone here play with Anbox?

As the title says, I'm curious if anyone here has played with Anbox? I'm going to try running some android apps on an old Dell Latitude 2110 (after putting an SSD in it) just to see what happens. As...
  19. Re: Edubuntu was a good start for students learning the first steps to Linux. Revive

Debian Edu / Skolelinux is a good alternative:

    https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/

    Documentation is good.

    Re: Ran across this.

Linux is in use on many routers so a person might want to delve into firmware updates for their router. Speaking of which I wonder if AT&T ever pushes updates to my old Motorola NVG510? I should...
  21. Doh ................. errant unused drivers in cobwebbed pcs

I just thought I'd share a funny story. I pulled out an unused PC, I think it's been about 2 years since it got stuffed into the corner where all old stuff gets stacked, just long enough no memory...

    [xubuntu] Re: Zoom Communications Services

Should work fine. I'd never used it before this COVID "shut down" and I installed it very easily from:

    https://zoom.us/download

Just select Ubuntu 14.04+. I installed that version on Ubuntu...

    Re: what is your flavor?

Glad to hear that. There are currently only two non-native apps that I install on Kubuntu; synaptic and gparted. Otherwise I find it totally usable. There is a bit of a learning curve but it's not...

    Re: what is your flavor?

Do you still keep Nautilus as file manager? It seems to me as if everything GNOME is headed downhill.
  25. Re: Will 20.04 get an official Ubuntu mini install?

You now have to use the New Ubuntu Server Installer:

    http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/netboot/focal/

    https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/netbooting-the-live-server-installer/14510

    I don't like it but...
