  1. [ubuntu] Re: i've installed Ubuntu 21.04, but i don't have internet.

One of my systems has that same NIC w/ the same revision. It started failing by dropping packets. I disabled it in the BIOS and installed a cheapo skge Marvell NIC ($10 in 2006) I had laying around...

    Re: SSHFS mount in FSTAB

There is a "Thread Tools" button near the top. Only the original poster can mark a thread as SOLVED. It will save people coming to help from bothering. Please and thank you.

That sounds like a security nightmare. DNS has a long history of being hacked. I've been hacked through DNS, in my younger days.

[server] Re: Set up unattended install

    Some "lite" reading:
https://ubuntu.com/download/alternative-downloads has a network installer for Ubuntu Server 20.04.

[server] Re: Set up unattended install

16.04 LTS support ended last month. No use in doing anything with that release - except wiping it and loading 20.04. Any clients should be clearly told that 16.04 support ended. Period.

    To...
  6. [all variants] Re: What is the Current fashion in distributed authentication

NIS+ was used all over the place - in Sun Micro shops. The server was only available on Solaris. Most Unix places didn't want vendor lock-in, so they moved to NDS or x.500 directory servers.

    There...
  7. [SOLVED] Re: do-release-upgrade fails cryptically without snapd

Thanks for the post. Time to make a decision about the OS our servers use, I suppose.

    [SOLVED] Re: Read-Only Drive

ajgreeny provided the command. It just wasn't understood, I suppose. We all have blinders, sometimes.

Anyway, if this is solved, help out the community and use the "Thread Tools" button near the...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Bad Sectors - CAN NOT save the data on the HDD

Nobody is born knowing these things. It took me over a decade as a programmer before most of this sunk into my bonehead. Then it took a few massive data-loss events before I actually did something -...
  10. Re: Files - Other Locations - missing removable/hard drives

From the lsblk output, which partitions do you expect to see?
The encrypted partitions need to be "opened" before any file system inside can be seen or accessed.
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Bad Sectors - CAN NOT save the data on the HDD

If a LiveCD or Try Ubuntu environment running from a flash drive are failing, then the computer hardware is dying. Probably something inside the motherboard. Initially, it looked like it could just...

    Re: Zim notebook questions

There are all sorts of downsides to converting an efficient PDF to an image. I can think of 9 reasons NOT to do that for 1 good reason why you might want/need to do it. Of course, if the PDF is...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Is Samba read/write rate performance on Ubuntu 20.04 capped at around 11MB/s?

    i218

I have no issues at all with i210, i211 or Intel PRO/1000 drivers. These are usually igb and e1000e drivers.

In theory, the i218 device should be using the e1000e driver. ...
  14. Re: Files - Other Locations - missing removable/hard drives

The fstab file doesn't have any clear references to other non-OS storage.

    lsblk -e 7 -o name,size,type,fstype,mountpoint
will show the devices, file system types, and some other useful...
  15. Re: Struggling to automounting a network drive

Your guess is correct. Don't allow spaces anywhere in mounts. Use an '_' instead. Spaces are always troublesome in file systems, so the simple answer is DON'T USE THEM.

    Also, I really hope that...

    sudo chown -R $USER:deven /dev/sdb1
    is wrong.
    Use:

    sudo chown -R $USER:deven /stuff
    Actually,

    sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /stuff
is probably better for 99% of people viewing here.

Sadly, NIS is 1000x easier than the current solutions. It is 1,000,000x less secure too. NIS shouldn't have been used the last 20 yrs - at least.

Here's the Ubuntu Server documentation on LDAP : ...
