Damn Small Linux.
Looks like you are missing the modules for that new kernel, /lib/modules/2.6.32-custom.
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Make sure you close synaptic first before you run those two commands from a terminal.
Make sure you unpack one file at a time instead of doing both on the same line.
Do you belong to group adm? You need to belong to group adm to use sudo.

Make sure to burn it at a slow speed.
Yes, x86 version.
Looks to me like you have a bad download. Remove the current version on your machine and download it again.
I didn't have any problem unpacking it on my machine.
Not all DVD players can play avi files.
If you change the directories to rw only, then you cannot change to them. What you want for directories are rwx--7. Meanwhile, files can be rw--6.
chmod -R 755
Which directory/folder do you have in mind? Be really careful with permissions especially about the directories/files outside your $HOME.
From a terminal, navigate to OpenFOAM directory. Then, unpack it with
tar xvzf OpenFOAM-1.6.General.gtgz
That would create a new directory, OpenFOAM-1.6 so you need to change to that new...

It depends on the speed of your machine. On an ~1h30m movie, it takes me less than 2 hours to convert .avi to .iso.
I don't think it would take that long for an hour movie if you have a decent...
And have you tried to mount it by hand, from a terminal, again?
sudo /media/sdb2
sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb2 /media/sdb2
df -h
Use ntfsfix (part of the ntfsprogs package) to mount your ntfs partition.
What does it say when you run this command from a terminal?
file OpenFOAM-1.6.General.gtgz
Where did you download OpenFOAM-1.6.General.gtgz anyway?
To change password, open a terminal (although you could do it from System -> Administration -> Users & Groups) and run
passwd
Swapoff is what you have to run to unmount the swap partition. Then, click the last partition and remove it. Then move on the next one until the whole harddrive is unallocated.
