did you try to boot on recovery mode and fix eventually broken packages, because I don't think that the problem is specific to firefox, if you cannot log in after a freeze, maybe it's Nautilus that...

The problem is definetly from the cd. Try to reburn it and make sure you are burning it as an ISO image. Also slow down the writing speed when burning and do not move your computer while burning.
