    Re: Strange output from netstat

Hi limbenjamin, thanks for the suggestions. Both fail2ban and geoip look promising. Your comment about badly designed applications was the reason to leave default in first place. I remember I have...

I cannot find how to improve output with netstat, but your recommendation about ss was very good, I was a bit traditionl with my choice of tool.

    Re: Strange output from netstat

Thanks @chris137. Indeed, changing the port sounds a good idea.

I am still buffled on how on earth to make netstat not truncate its output. This doesn't happen with other commands as eg. ps.

    Re: Strange output from netstat

How stupid of me. The only thing that was going on is somebody trying to brute-force his way through ssh as root. This is what the netstat entry was about. This explains why the process kept...

    Re: Suspicious file /tmp/ask

Thank you again @zero212. Well, I understand that. It is obvious that the files ended up there from some web site exploit as their owner was www-data. Both rootkit checks are good, I wouldn't expect...

    Re: Strange output from netstat

Thank you @zero212. I have used nethogs, it reports nothing extraordinary. Seemingly valid traffic + a very small footprint from the irregular ssh process as one would expect. I was wondering how I...

    Suspicious files under /tmp/.X11-unix

Following a previous question, on one of my ubuntu web servers I have found the following files:

    /tmp/.X11-unix/ipays2.php

    Suspicious file /tmp/ask

On one of my ubuntu web servers I found the following file:

    /tmp/ask

    <snip>

My perl knowledge is limited, but it looks to me like an irc bot with flooding capabilities.

    My questions are:
  11. Re: Move all duplicate files to another folder.

I had a similar issue, but instead of moving the files I needed to add a symlink. So what I did was to redirect the output of fdupes to a file, and then created a bash script to go through each line...

I had the same issue here. Had been using the ati propriatary drivers which seem to have been causing the trouble. I removed them and now works like a charm. So maybe the whole issue is something...

I have used sbackup on one desktop without issues. I have never tried to launch it manually though, I simply scheduled a cron job to run as root and it works as should.

    [ubuntu] Re: Bash shell help

The if statement by itself is correct. I can think of two possible problems:

    a. You have specified #!/bin/sh instead of #!/bin/bash

    b. The $available_blocks variable is not properly set.
