Poll: Re: What visual (eyesight) problems u have?

Re: I saw Richard Stallman lecture last night!

Hey! I wasn't calling you a zealot, in fact I wasn't referring to anyone in particular, so calm down. :)

I CAN'T avoid proprietary software sometimes because frankly, OSS doesn't do everything I...

Re: What Os, are you using and why?

    Vista Ultimate with SP1 (32-bit)
    Hardy Heron 64-bit

Vista as the primary, Ubuntu as something to poke at

Re: I saw Richard Stallman lecture last night!

Does get a bit annoying at times though. Computers are there to perform a task - they're tools. Sure it would be nice if OSS addressed all needs and at the level of functionality that people expect,...
  6. Poll: Re: Say something about your country

    Australia.

We got electricity I think about a decade ago, but I can't quite remember.

    Re: Ubuntu full of viruses

Seems like a lot of you would prefer Windows to remain dominant and virus-ridden, if at least for the business. :D

Poll: Re: What is your age and what do you use ubuntu for?

    25. Gave up trying to convert, so I just keep poking at it every now and then, observing its progress.

Re: I saw Richard Stallman lecture last night!

BTW, it's Open Source, not Sauce. Source means the origin (ie. in this case, the code of the program) - Sauce is the stuff you put on sausages or whatever. :)
  10. Re: OpenBSD slams RIchard Stallman in release song...

"If you're not with us, you're against us."

You're not a terrorist lover are you boy? :)

EDIT: Ah hell, I brought politics in the conversation. Guess I'm gonna get banned for that. Well... was...

Re: I saw Richard Stallman lecture last night!

Indeed, but then again it's a good thing people can be tracked with them... in certain cases.

I'd argue the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Everything you do in society can be...

Re: I saw Richard Stallman lecture last night!

Didn't RMS once suggest mobile phones were "surveillance devices" that would be used to spy on people and suggested that people should avoid them if at all possible? I think he mentioned that at a...

Re: University Professor Tries to Hammer Ubuntu

I agree 100% with everything you said.

But... I've got enough crap to deal with in adult life than fight yet another battle that's not worth the effort, hence I just use Office and get along with...
  14. Re: I Have an Idea to Solve the Ibex Theme Problems.

I enjoy color. I hate the drab looks of ye-olde operating systems like Win 95 and older versions of Linux (sorry K.Mandla).

Maybe there should be several color schemes with the same wallpapers,...

Re: University Professor Tries to Hammer Ubuntu

Yes, but when Microsoft formats are a de facto standard (eg. .doc) used virtually everywhere around the world, the fact that it's not part of an existing established standard, really doesn't matter...
  16. Re: Would you install a linux distro for someone?

Did it once. Lasted for a short while, but I ended up putting XP back on for various reasons. So much for the dream.
  17. Re: ow many punch cards to distribute Ubuntu

More than a little and less than too many.
  18. Re: OpenBSD slams RIchard Stallman in release song...

OK, I suppose. Is it bad if I happen to like a lot of the proprietary software I'm using though? Or is that like thinking dirty thoughts? :)

Of course I could. I could drop everything I've...
  19. Re: What do you think of the sudo timeout / grace period?

It's a balance between security and convenience. Ubuntu is about working the balance after all. Maybe there should be a preferences option somewhere that's easily accessible to change the timeout (if...
  20. Re: OpenBSD slams RIchard Stallman in release song...

Alright, let me ask you this: if my career is based on using proprietary software packages, what do you suggest I do?

Free alternatives aren't an option BTW, because compared with Xilinx,...
  21. Re: OpenBSD slams RIchard Stallman in release song...

You aren't honestly putting software licenses and proprietary software in the same league as pedophilia and murder are you? They're way different in terms of scale.
  22. Re: What do you think of the sudo timeout / grace period?

The grace period is very useful. There's a reason I disabled UAC in Vista.

    Re: Ubuntu full of viruses

Or maybe they're actually written by black hat programmers working for organized crime groups (mainly in Russia/China) to obtain personal info to sell on the black market. Such info is VERY...

Re: How much RAM do you have?

2 GB. Gives me room to move.
  25. Re: OpenBSD slams RIchard Stallman in release song...

    It's a problem of extremes.

You have a totally proprietary system on one end, and a totally free system on another. There are benefits to both (convenience/software selection on one side,...
