I have the same problem w/14.04. I have an HP Pavilion DV9009us and the last two lines I see after I click on "shut down" are
After that, I have to manually turn the laptop off.
Any help...

You had to have an internet connection when you ran that command also. If any doubt run this command and we will make sure.

BTW, last night I did manage to get some wireless message text to show up when I clicked on the connection icon but it said "no firmware installed". I then re-booted and that message text...
