  1. Re: KDE vs GNOME - Which one did I choose for my desktop?

    I got the same sense.

I don't get that same feeling about KDE, however, on distros that have their main focus on KDE, such as Linspire/Freespire.

  2. KDE vs GNOME - Which one did I choose for my desktop?

When I mentioned on the forums here that I had switched from Linspire to Ubuntu, some of you asked if I had switched to Ubuntu or Kubuntu. At that time, I mentioned that I was running BOTH Ubuntu...

Re: Who thinks M$ might try this?

They wouldn't try something that drastic at this point, but they probably wish they had done it back in the glory days of their monopoly. =)

  4. Poll: Re: What if Windows was free (as in free speech and zero cost) and Ubuntu was not?

I voted for Ubuntu, but technically, I'd continue using both as I do now. I use Ubuntu the majority of the time, but now and then there is that program that will only run on Windows (Tivo desktop...
  5. Thanks Everyone!

Thanks for allowing me to spend some time here. It has been pleasant, as always. I hope I was able to help answer some of your questions and concerns about this recent announcement. I will now...
  6. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

For legal reasons, I'm not allowed to comment on our settlement with Microsoft or any negotiations since that time, but I can say that obviously Linspire has taken steps to make sure we will always...
  7. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

There are certainly no plans for that that I've ever heard mentioned. I believe, in fact, that Canonical believes even being able to JUST SEE the availability of any commercial apps would be an...
  8. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

I can assure you Mark and the others at Canonical guard that belief very carefully. This is why they want to make sure and control what bits and pieces of CNR go into Ubuntu.

    As for how the...
  9. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

It depends on the license. If we have to pay per unit fees, then we have no choice but to charge for that to cover the costs. However, some licenses are free or a flat fee, and those we can...
  10. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

As mentioned in the list of features, users do have one-click access to the source code for ALL FOSS software in the CNR Warehouse. Anyone can find this on any of the product pages in the CNR...
  11. Re: Sam Varghese : "Ubuntu? Not for me, thanks"

Absolutely. Personally, however, I tune those people out when they cross the line of "suggesting" something to me because they are sincerely interested in my well being, and those who go commando...
  12. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

Here is a list of everyone who shares in CNR revenue:

    1. Commercial software vendors.

Anytime commercial software is placed in the CNR Warehouse via our Publisher program...
  13. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

Correct. Canonical certainly asked for and received rev share, as do all partners with CNR (vendor, OEMs, distros, etc.). Now, what they plan on doing with that money I have no control over. I'm...
  14. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

I wouldn't try. I respect their right to NOT put certain kinds of software on their computers. Hopefully they'll respect my right TO put what I want on mine.

I have this one "vegan" (strong...
  15. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

CNR provides many more options for commercial software beyond multi media codecs, such as drivers, games, commercial applications, CAD programs, licensced fonts, etc.

    Examples here.

  16. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

    Users make that determination themselves.

Would it be easier if the ONLY way to get digital music was via iTunes? I don't think it's confusing that there are alternatives, because most users...
  17. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

Yes. Some have said they would be contributing their share back to open source projects.

    Kevin
  18. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

CNR has all the software you'll have via apt or synaptic, but then it also has additional commercial titles. There are also a lot of features you get in helping you find, install, manage, keep...
  19. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

For the average technical user, yes, but certainly not for the average computer user. 95% of the world wouldn't have a clue how to use apt/syn. Keep in mind the average computer user is using...
  20. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

And no one would ever force you to. Sounds like you don't need it, but for 95% of the Microsoft Windows world, they'll never move to Linux if it's complicated, doesn't provide commercial software,...
  21. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

It's certainly meant more work on our end, but out hope is to hide the layers of complexity from users who don't know what an RPM or DEB is. For Linux to move to the mainstream, users need to just...
  22. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

Some things take time. We had to enhance it to be able to support commercial applications AND an open sourced client.

Can't wait for Launchpad to be open sourced! I'm sure that announcement...
  23. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

Then you'd be wrong. Ubuntu is the first joint-public announcement, but it certainly won't be the last. In fact, we're actually further along in our relationship with some of the other popular...
  24. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

It's true that Linspire and Freespire default to KDE for the desktop environment, BUT when it comes to applications, we always try to use the "best of breed," regardless. For example, OpenOffice,...
  25. Re: Linspire and Ubuntu partnering up / CNR ported to Ubuntu...

We have a policy to try and send ALL our patches upstream. Obviously, the more of our changes that get put in upstream, the less work we have to do with each new release of a baseline project. As...
