  1. [ubuntu] Re: thunderbird as news reader: optus settings

Same here. My bet is that the linux version of TBird doesn't have the newsreader option.

If you ever find out anything for sure re the newsreader, I'd sure like to know.

[ubuntu] Re: Filezilla crashes in 12.04

It appears to be a Ubuntu rather than a Filezilla problem, so it doesn't look like the FZ crew are going to fix it. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

[ubuntu] Re: Webcam not working in Ubuntu 11.10

Thank you Matt... both worked!!!! Both produced the same non-fatal error:

  5. [SOLVED] Re: Evolution 2.32 Unix Mail file How?

  7. [SOLVED] Evolution 2.32 Unix Mail file How?

Evolultion 2.28 and earlier produced a Unix format mail file in /home/xxx/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox.sbd iirc. The version of Evolution that comes with 11.04 (2.32) seems to do no such thing -- at...

  10. [ubuntu] Re: ubuntu 9.10 doesn't recognize my cdrom drive

    From your /etc/fstab:

    /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

This means your cdrom drive IS recognized and is called 'scd0'

It seems to me it should work...
  11. [SOLVED] Re: how to pass parameters to grub at boot time??

Solved it is! The gui boots fine if 'quiet splash' is inserted back along with 'acpi=off' into /etc/default/grub and grub is updated.

Is there a known problem getting to the gui from the command...

  13. [SOLVED] Re: how to pass parameters to grub at boot time??

    Thank you again HH!

Well, I was able to do everything as you outlined. The new xorg.conf file showed that it wanted to use the 'intel' driver rather than the 'vesa' driver. There was an enormous...
  14. [SOLVED] Re: how to pass parameters to grub at boot time??

Here is the output of Xorg.0.log after X crashes on startup -- I think the problem is near the end of the file, but I'm not sure what it's telling me.

  16. [SOLVED] Re: how to pass parameters to grub at boot time??

OK.... making progress... I had a carriage return after that long line and had the parameter on the next line. Putting 'acpi=off' in right after where I took out 'quiet splash' successfully booted...
  17. [SOLVED] Re: how to pass parameters to grub at boot time??

Thanks for the most clear procedure.

Unfortunately, it still wouldn't boot. I was able to determine that it was acpi=off rather than the other parameters that allowed the live CD to work.

    Grub...
  18. [SOLVED] how to pass parameters to grub at boot time??

Old Toshiba laptop model A30 -- tried various installs 8.04/9.04/9.10. They all hung trying to boot the install disks after the initial few screens.
