I believe so, yes. I changed my /home/shared folder's permissions to 777 (read+write+execute for everyone).
Hi,
Unfortunately, my Samba needs are very, very simple, so I just edit the main config file once and I'm done. I've never used a graphical tool because I just don't need the more advanced...
Arch seems to bring out some emotions from people. I've seen Arch FUD for years and I'm honestly surprised (I shouldn't be) that I still see some of the same stuff being said.
Before I begin my...
I've heard, and have not checked that some apps can leave behind configs or changes they've made to the system even after uninstalling them. It's because of OSX's simple paradigm of an app just being...
I really don't see a difference in battery life with KDE versus anything else (assuming compositing is enabled in whatever environment I'm using).
I also have nepomuk turned off, which I'm sure...
1. I take it you don't use any Qt apps at all in Ubuntu?
2. One of the biggest complaints by typophiles is that Linux does a terrible job of font rendering.
3. I agree with you there.
4. And I...
Emacs is so powerful. It's also kind of a lifestyle choice. It takes a lot to master Emacs. Even more so than to master Vim, IMO.
Is that Final Fantasy Tactics Advance? If so, how in the world did you find it better than FF Tactics?
My list is probably:
1. Final Fantasy Tactics
2. Final Fantasy 7
3. Final Fantasy 6
4....
That and it's kind of slow. Still, it's way better than (regular) Gnome-Shell.
Strange. My Gnome-Shell is super laggy on my intel graphics computer. Kwin 4.8 is the first version that doesn't feel terrible on this computer as well.
Compiz has all kinds of advanced settings,...
In what ways is Compiz a lumbering giant?
Disk space? I think my latest Compiz git build took up some 50MB.
Memory Use? My Compiz standalone session uses about 130MB RAM at startup, whereas my...
You can be against something, but still be pragmatic and realistic.
Never type out a whole filename if it's more than a few letters. Just type the first few letters and hit TAB. Hitting TAB twice gives you a list of all files/directories starting with the letters you...
Fair enough, but the dependencies issue does count. I imagine that you have to pull quite a bid of KDE to be able to not only run Kwin, but to then customize it via the settings dialog of KDE.
...
The only reason KWin doesn't share some of the same problems is because Compiz is desktop agnostic.
KWin only has to worry about working with Kicker inside of KDE. Compiz, believe it or not, is...
Kwin is the only one even close to Compiz's capabilities so far, and it is very lacking and performs way worse than Compiz. Every time I use KDE, I replace Kwin with Compiz.
Use feh or Nitrogen to set the wallpaper.
Claws-Mail for email
xfce4-power-manager if you have a laptop
parcellite for clipboard
Thunar or PCManFM for file managers

I used to say that urxvt was my favorite. It was very fast at displaying big outputs on my old computer, but I've had trouble with it using an xft font and compositing.
These days, I really like...
Does Jupiter use a lot of the same kernel parameters as laptop-mode-tools?
What would you argue are the reasons for using Jupiter over laptop-mode-tools?
No, Ubuntu still uses Xorg. "Some day" Ubuntu will use Wayland.
Never leave your laptop plugged in when the battery is fully charged. I've read that it's bad (even though, the stupid kids working as Best Buy are told to tell you it's fine) and everyone I know...
I guess they expect people to grab near the min/max/close buttons.
Every time there is a new KDE, I make sure to play with it in my Kubuntu virtual machine.
I think KDE has really great apps. KMail, KTorrent, Okular, Dolphin are all top quality apps.
But I...
If you do choose to use a client, use IMAP. POP3 just doesn't make sense to me these days. With POP you have to eventually use the web interface to delete stuff if your mailbox gets full. This kills...
