[ubuntu] Re: How safe is an open port?

Are you talking about leaving some port on your router open for use with Transmission?
  3. [all variants] Re: How to toggle power of wired network link?

I find it strange that you say Vista does something different. As far as I've seen where I work, freshly un-boxed machines will show network activity(lights) when plugged in even if they haven't been...

Poll: [ubuntu] Re: Your favorite BitTorrent client

I just stick with transmission. It seems to have enough features for me, can't really think of anything I would add. But then again I don't torrent frequently.
  5. Re: Why is Vista Business/Ultimate required on low-end graphics laptops?

I'd rather lean more towards the idea that they net more money with a more expensive version of windows. As in, they charge 140 for the upgrade, but only pay (just picking a number) $30 more for the...
  6. Re: Why is Vista Business/Ultimate required on low-end graphics laptops?

This is like asking why many car companies force "packages" on customers instead of letting them chose only the options they like.

Recently I've been twice shocked by different dealers. I've been...

[ubuntu] Re: Mac want to be.

I believe it's launched from the command line. And to have it launch every restart you have to add it under system > preferences > sessions. Though I may have missed a detail, it's been a few months...

[all variants] Re: Building new computer, please advise

I and several friends have had good luck with EVGA branded Nvidia based cards, and they also used to have a trade up program(probably still do) where if you decided you needed a higher spec'd card...

    [ubuntu] Re: Can't restart computer!

I'm pretty stumped then, unfortunately I don't have really deep knowledge of hardware.

But as far as only being six months old, that means very little when you deal with the number of systems I've...

[all variants] Re: Building new computer, please advise

Interesting, I was thinking of one for my entertainment center so I could surf from the couch. Maybe I'll hold off a bit and see if my buddy's holds up before I drop the cash. Just out of curiosity...

    [ubuntu] Re: Wireless/Network Problem?

what model of laptop and or wireless card is it?

I've had a problem with athleros (sp?) cards developing an error that requires restart on at least two different laptops.

[all variants] Re: Building new computer, please advise

    A few thoughts.

    1. yes there are 4 GB sticks out there but they're expensive so 16GB is possible with only 4 slots

    2. Considering your monitor situation and the price range of graphics cards...

    [ubuntu] Re: Can't restart computer!

What it does is tests the RAM to make sure that it is not malfunctioning. It will do things like write all ones write all zeros, write a specific pattern and swap pieces of it around. I don't know...

    [ubuntu] Re: Can't restart computer!

You can still get to grub if you totally power off the computer correct?

There should be an option for memtest86 or something similarly named.

Alternately I believe the Ubuntu live cds include...

    [ubuntu] Re: Can't restart computer!

That's unfortunate. I'm really inclined to believe it is a harware related problem. I'm out of ideas that are more than speculation at this point. It almost seems like something hangs around that...

  19. Re: PC related embaressments. Yours or.......

Actually all this talk of power issues reminds me of another. A coworker brought me a monster of a machine (high speed quad core 8GB of ram Nvidia Quadro) that just simply would not power on. She'd...
  20. [ubuntu] Re: A huge question that will inflate your face.

Do make sure to save any files you want to keep somewhere else like on a usb flash drive. You probably knew to do that but I've been surprised in the past by people saying "where did all my stuff go."

Is this only happening on reboots, or does it happen on cold boots as well?
  23. [ubuntu] Re: A huge question that will inflate your face.

I actually agree with this as far as not switching unless there is a good reason. I've had more problems with 64-bit versions than 32-bit versions. This may not be true overall but is personal...
  24. [ubuntu] Re: A huge question that will inflate your face.

    indeed 64 bit capable
  25. [ubuntu] Re: A huge question that will inflate your face.

I often check the bios as a quick and dirty way to find out if the computer supports 64bit, generally there is a plain english entry that says if the cpu is 64 bit capable.
